Skin changes during pregnancy | Consult the best gynecologists in Delhi

As your pregnancy goes on, you may notice that your skin and hair change. Some women get dark spots on their faces, and hormonal changes can make their skin a little darker.

You may also get stretch marks on your body, especially where your skin is stretching to make room for your growing baby, like on your stomach.

Chloasma – dark patches on the face

Some pregnant women get dark, bumpy spots on their faces. These spots usually show up on the upper cheek, nose, lips, and forehead. The word for this is “chloasma.” It is also sometimes called the “mask of pregnancy” or “melasma.”

Chloasma is thought to be caused by female sex hormones that tell cells that make pigments to make more melanin pigments (dark pigments) when the skin is exposed to the sun. Some women who use oral contraceptives get these patches on their skin (the pill).

More likely to get these patches are women with light brown skin who live in places where the sun is very strong. Most of the time, the patches go away a few months after giving birth, but some women may have them for several years.

Using broad-spectrum sunscreen every day to protect the skin while pregnant and on the pill may make it less likely that chloasma will happen. After pregnancy, you should still use sunscreen because going out in the sun could make the patches come back. Some creams that doctors have to give you may help get rid of the spots.

Skin and hair changes

As your hormones change during pregnancy, your nipples and the skin around them will get darker. Your skin may also get a little darker, either in spots or all over. Moles, birthmarks, and freckles might also get darker. Linea nigra is the name for the dark line that some women get down the middle of their stomachs. After the baby is born, these changes will slowly go away, but your nipples may stay a little darker for a while.

If you are pregnant and sunbathe, you may burn more easily. Use a good sunscreen with a high SPF and don’t stay in the sun for too long.

Pregnancy can also make your hair grow faster and make it greasier. It may seem like you’re losing a lot of hair after the baby is born, but you’re just losing the extra hair.

Stretch marks

During pregnancy, stretch marks happen to a lot of women, usually in the last three months.

Most of the time, they show up on your stomach, but they can also show up on your upper thighs or breasts. Stretch marks are not harmful, and over time, your skin will shrink and the stretch marks will turn into white scars.
