The Martian’s Survival on a Planet That Is Not Earth

Have you ever wondered what you would do if you were stranded at school or an unidentified place you don’t feel comfortable in? It brings so many unwelcome thoughts that put us in a terrifying mood, and we end up having anxiety attacks. The more we think about ourselves trapped in a mysterious place, the more we fall deep into scary thoughts. But what would Mark Watney in The Martian have thought about it? He didn’t even think much about it, maybe. But he still got stranded on a Plant that is not Earth.

If you haven’t watched The Martian, this is your time to start watching. The Martian is the type of movie that will have you at the edge of your seat throughout the runtime.

With the lead cast of Matt Damon as Dr. Mark Watney, the supporting cast of Jessica Chastain as Commander Melissa Lewis, Kristen Wiig as Annie Montrose, Jeff Daniels as Theodore “Teddy” Sanders, Michael Peña as Major Rick Martinez, Sean Bean as Mitch Henderson, Kate Mara as Beth Johanssen. This is the kind of movie which you have you in tears by the end — the happy ones.

The Martian or Robinson Crusoe?

If you have read Robinson Crusoe, you will get a similar vibe from The Martian. Because Robinson Crusoe was stranded on the island all alone, Mark Watney in The Martian is also all alone on the entire Plant Mars. But it doesn’t mean that the whole movie is based on the novel; the tone and details are new.

Let’s compare: Robinson Crusoe was on Earth, where he could hunt and pick trees for his food. In comparison, Mark Watney was fighting strange weather while being in a completely different setting. He was even denied the most basic need – food. Since the quantity of water on Mars was extremely low, Watney had no way to hunt or pick trees to eat his meals.

Survival Is an Auto Instinct

Barely surviving the inhabitable atmosphere, Watney also survived his oxygen loss. Without breathing, we will all die. If we are asked, “What would you do if your space helmet cracks?” Our ultimate answer would be death. But Mark Watney pulled through with duct tape to continue his life.

At first, Watney was unsure of his life. He thought he was done on Mars, where no other person was there to cremate or bury his dead body. He decided to go through each day, which led him to live every day, even if it took him to dig out his crewmate’s feces. Being a Botanist, Watney put his knowledge into growing potatoes to continue his survival.

A Genre About Science of Hope

With the genre of Science Fiction, The Martian pulled an IMDb rating of 8/10. Though it was released in 2015, it has barely lost its ranking. With the current theme of isolation going around, we all have felt somewhat similar to what Mark Watney would have felt. Although the movie is fairly predictable, the screen time is not dull. Mark does his best to humor his watchers, seeing his problems as solving exercises. This brings a lot of hope in the viewers because our problems are never always our faults; it is an outcome of bad judgment.

As much as it seems similar to the 2D character in The Martian, our life is way more complicated. That is why Watney is scripted to have a ‘how didactic tone in the movie. This careful placement brings the audience closer and makes them focus on the movie. Because at one time, all of us had wondered what would happen if an Alien invasion was to happen. We had thought of ways to continue our daily life when the zombie apocalypse would happen. This human nature is what we call ‘survival,’ and it brings hope that we will work it out.

Life goes On

One demanding pill to swallow is that we have to go on no matter what happens in our life. We think that we were pushed down from life and that everyone must acknowledge our pain. It is alright to feel this way, though. Mark Watney also thought the same at one point. But when he realizes that people are going on their daily lives while he is stranded on an unknown planet, he stops gaining sympathy and starts working on his survival.

For Mark, it was Life and Death, but for the people, it was ‘salvaging a person who got stranded on Mars.’ This teaches us a very good lesson about hope. Our survival is only based on hope, and if this is removed from life, everything crumbles to nothingness.
